Choose the Right Wing Size and Shape
In marginal wind conditions (8 to 15 knots), generating sufficient board speed to create hydrofoil lift is the primary challenge. For a typical 75 kg rider, this generally means sizing up to a 6 m² or 7 m² canopy from our wing collection.
The outline of the wing plays a crucial role here. Riding Techniques: How to Get Airborne in Light Wind
When the breeze drops, simply holding up the wing won’t cut it—you need active input and whole-body coordination. Proper technique can extend your low-end range by up to 3 knots, saving you from exhausting, unproductive pumping.
- Synchronized pumping: Never pump using only your arms. Pull down with the wing while simultaneously driving the board forward through your legs. This motion creates apparent wind, boosting the wing’s pull and unsticking the board from the surface.
- The S-turn take-off: Avoid trying to pop up directly on a crosswind course. Bearing off slightly downwind allows you to gather board speed quickly before smoothly carving back onto your intended heading as the foil lifts.
- Deep, rhythmic strokes: Engage the wing with deep, circular pumping motions to maintain continuous airflow across the canopy. As soon as you rise onto the foil, transition from long pulls to shorter, rapid pumps to stay airborne.
